10 Beloved And Critically Acclaimed Films That Aren't Actually Very Good

4. Aliens

Aliens Don't get me wrong I really enjoy Aliens despite the fact that I find it to be a crappy movie. I like the stylized action sequences and the Xenomorph is always a welcome addition to any movie as far as I'm concerned but I can't help but feeling like it's a betrayal of the original material. Whereas Alien was a dark, brooding, symbolic and visceral Science Fiction masterpiece Aliens trades all of the intelligence of the first film for one liners and stock characters. The greatest thing about Alien was how real it all felt. All of the characters were people you could really become attached to because they were so realistically rendered by many actors working at the top of their game and the Xenomorph was used more to stress the symbolism of the fears of birth. Aliens offers none of that and even cheapens its titular character by making it possible to slay large quantities of them at a time. For me, Alien is a movie that's completely dedicated to the fear of the unknown and retains a great deal of artistic integrity while Aliens is a mindless, over the top action movie that squanders its greatest assets.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
