9. The Invitation
After the critical acclaim of her breakout debut Girlfight and the not so praised Aeon Flux and Jennifer’s Body, director Karyn Kasuma is back on form with indie horror The Invitation about a dinner party gone awry.
Prometheus star Logan Marshall-Green plays grieving father Will who along with his new girlfriend and friends is invited to a dinner party hosted by his ex-wife Eden and her new husband David who he hasn’t seen since the tragic death of Will and Eden’s son two years earlier. As if that set up wasn’t uncomfortable enough already it soon transpires that Eden and David’s soiree may be less wine and cheese, more brainwashing cult fest.
It’s a simmering, intense psychological horror that poses some interesting situations about loss, grief and spirituality and boasts a slow-burn pace that is paid off with a brutal, explosive finale. A worthy addition to the ‘dinner party from hell’ horror subgenre.
