3. We Need To Talk About Kevin
Sometimes, there is nothing scarier than showing a unique perspective on a subject that everyone knows to be horrifying. This movie is a truly disturbing yet profound dive into the effects that a tragedy can have on a person and their family, and although it's intended to be a drama, it's a pure piece of nightmare fuel.
The movie follows Tilda Swinton's Eva, as she raises a disturbed and troubled young boy named Kevin. As their life together continues, so do his creepy and sociopathic tendencies, leading to a host of unsettling scenes, vicious attacks and a haunting climax that is topical, poignant and traumatising.
Focussing on the mother of a dangerous child turned criminal is such a compelling outlook, as you see how she is scapegoated for the acts her son committed, although she worked hard not to instil this kind of behaviour in him. Swinton does a fantastic job with the role, as she shows how hard it can be to let go of the love she bore for her son, whilst capturing the trauma he left in his wake.
Despite the socially charged message, the film is an absolute nightmare. Ezra Miller's performance in the titular role is full of tension, and the slow pace makes the violent acts seen throughout the flick truly take you by surprise.
