1. Battle Of New York - The Avengers
As the culmination of four years and five movies worth of buildup and expectations, writer/director Joss Whedon was under immense pressure to deliver with The Avengers, one of the most hugely-anticipated movies of all time. With a project of such massive scale, the pressure was on to deliver action to match. Which is exactly what Whedon did, as the climactic Battle of New York turned out to be one of the most crowd-pleasing set-pieces in blockbuster history.
The battle takes up almost the entirety of the movie's third act, as Earth's Mightiest Heroes finally overcome their differences and work together to stop Loki's Chitauri invasion of New York. Full of fan-pleasing moments, massive-scale destruction and no shortage of laugh-out-loud humor, each member of the Avengers gets plenty of time to shine as they go about saving the world.
Two of the best moments belong to the Hulk (punching Thor out of the way and the now-classic 'puny god'), but the undoubted highlight is the stunning tracking shot that follows the Avengers throughout the city, a moment that had comic book fans across the planet grinning from ear to ear.
