10 Best Andy Serkis Performances
9. Captain Haddock - The Adventures of Tintin
Serkis has had plenty of opportunities to tackle famous characters in his tenure, and Captain Haddock from The Adventures of Tintin was one of his most successful. The Steven Spielberg directed animation was well received by critics and audiences. The story follows the adventures of Tintin and Haddock as they search for treasure left behind by the captain's ancestors.
The alcoholic man of the sea was an easily charming yet pitiable character. We wanted to watch the pair succeed not just for the sake of finding the treasure, but to see Haddock get his life together. It was clearly an incredibly fun role for Serkis as he has plenty of energy and spirit in his voice and physical performance throughout.
His Scottish accent paired with the roughness of his delivery made the character feel aged and genuine but still cartoonish. As this combination of animation and realism was one of the films focusses, he blended into the feature perfectly.
The perfect choice for the role, Serkis brought his signature motion capture skill to something far more human than before. His choices and general comedy skills helped to lead this highly ambitious project and continued to display his incredible range.
