This film is another example of a movie acting as a cinematic exploration of a hit series, and boy does this one hit the nail on the head. The epic and groundbreaking experience of Neon Genesis Evangelion was extraordinary, and creating a cinematic ending to the series was a genius move.
The End of Evangelion takes episodes 25 and 26 and examines them from an alternate perspective. It shows as Seele initiates a fully-fledged attack on NERV, and Shinji (the series protagonist) battles to save it and faces massive ramifications for humanity.
Everything that you experienced in the show, you'll get here too, and by the bucket-load. The typical Gundam-style Mecha robots fighting against giant beasts (angels) is grand and bombastic. Still, the quieter moments between the characters and the greater philosophies sprinkle it with a sense of profoundness.
The ambiguity of the film's place in the series canon is also fascinating, as while it feels like the series' true ending, on the one hand, it also seems very much like an alternate look at a climax. There aren't many franchises that would leave it up to the viewer to canonise themselves, so it is unique for that.
