10 Best Carl Reiner Films

5. Enter Laughing

Ocean's Eleven Carl Reiner Brad Pitt
Columbia Pictures

Carl Reiner's directorial debut was never released on VHS or DVD, however, it has appeared on TCM over the years, so its absence is only a matter of time.

Reiner only had a handful of TV credits under his name when he sought to finance an adaptation of his novel and stage play. Enter Laughing is a largely autobiographical story about a young New York Jewish man (Reni Santoni of Dirty Harry) looking to break into show business.

This would be a common theme in a lot of Reiner's work, and he often managed to keep it fresh. It's certainly an important film in that respect, setting in place a throughline that works for most of his career.

It's also clear Reiner used his TV and comedy connections, calling in every favour gladly obliged. The supporting cast includes Don Rickles, Elaine May and The Dick Van Dyke Show's Richard Deacon.

Reiner's passing may well inspire fans and friends to push for a release, and TCM's message boards are already requesting a rerun, so it may be wise to keep an eye out in the near future.
