4. The Seventh Seal

Ingmar Bergman's existential masterpiece The Seventh Seal has been parodied in just about every type of art you could think of - not to mention countless films - and it's not without good reason. The sheer wealth of iconic imagery he musters is exemplified by this stunning shot, which is again cheating a little given that it's not the
final shot, but comes about a minute before the end and certainly gives the film its lasting impact. After medieval knight Antonius Block (Max von Sydow) spends the entirety of the film playing Chess with Death in order to try and save his own life, he accepts the futility of it and gives in. The next morning, Jof has one of his visions, in which he envisages Death leading a Dance of Death that includes Block and his followers, asserting that they all have met their expected end. It's a beautifully haunting imager and the single frame for which the film is surely best known.
