10 Best Comic Storylines Featuring The Birds Of Prey Characters
1. Birds Of Prey: The Death Of Oracle
It seems only fitting that a Birds of Prey story itself tops the list. Other stories explore the heroines and villains in arguably more depth, but to understand the tone and aesthetic director Cathy Yan is probably going to swing for, it’s best to check out a Birds team up for yourself.
That said, there’s some differences in the graphic novel. For one, Harley isn’t a part of the Birds usually, but then the fantabulously long subtitle gives that away a bit.
Also, given that no Barbara Gordon has been cast, Oracle (a central character in this arc) won’t be in the movie at all. DC are lagging behind Marvel in seamlessly linking their superhero flicks together, so it’s possible they’re saving Barbara and her stint as Batgirl or Oracle for elsewhere.
Gail Simone’s four parter is definitely not one to miss though. As well as showing a more vulnerable side to Oracle, it does as good a job as JLA: Year One in exploring Black Canary’s eccentricities and gives Huntress a slice of limelight too.
While Yan obviously won’t be borrowing too much narratively here, she’d do well to include Simone’s flair for storytelling and carving out strong female leads, especially since her run on the book is so revered.
