2. Jennifer's Body

When it first came out, the responses to Jennifer’s Body weren’t all that great. It’s only over the past few years that people have started to recognise its merits and deeper meanings, interpreting it as a ‘forgotten feminist classic.’

Two childhood best friends who no longer have anything in common, the hot girl versus the nerd, a group of boys from a band taking advantage of a teenage girl’s body to better their own lives - doesn’t all this sound very familiar?

At its core it explores elements of the difficult female friendships as young girls grow up, with each of them changing in ways that can (depending on whose eyes you’re looking through) make them monsters.

When viewed more recently in the light of Me Too and the constant stream of accusations coming out against various all-male bands (if you loved pop-punk as a teen, I bet 2020 was a real rough year for you, huh?), it’s a commentary on the vulnerability and ensuing vilification of victims that came way ahead of the times.
