6. CW - Influencer

Picked up by Shudder and dropped on the streaming service in May 2023, Influencer has somewhat flown under the radar a little when it comes to mainstream attention. For those who've checked out this Kurtis David Harder-helmed picture, though, it's an absolute treat.

Madison is an influencer vacationing in Thailand, but all isn't as well as her followers are led to believe. While Madison's social media presence shows beautiful tourist spots, stunning weather, luscious local food, fancy cocktails, and a consistent smile, the reality is Madison's bored, lonely, and spends the bulk of her time in her hotel room, eating US junk food. That is, until she's befriended by CW.

CW is a friendly face who helps Madison turn this vanilla vacation into a fun one. To the point, the pair head out to a remote, small island... where CW drugs Madison, leaves her for dead, and heads back to the mainland, where she takes over Madison's online persona and lifestyle.

That's the first 20 minutes of Influencer, with the focus switching to CW as Madison's boyfriend comes looking for her, and CW does all she can to cover her tracks.

In a fantastic twist, as CW returns to that remote island in the film's final few minutes to dispose of the bodies of that boyfriend and another influencer, she's knocked out by a Madison who's still very much alive - despite being absent from the film for an hour and presumed to have died.

When CW wakes up, she sees Madison leaving the island on that boat, giving a wry smile as she knows she's doomed to the fate she had planned for Madison. As in, stranded alone on a tiny island, with no way to escape, and with eventual death on the horizon.

Once described as the Swiss Army Knife of WhatCulture, Andrew can usually be found writing, editing, or presenting on a wide range of topics. As a lifelong wrestling fan, horror obsessive, and comic book nerd, he's been covering those topics professionally as far back as 2010. In addition to his current WhatCulture role of Senior Content Producer, Andrew previously spent nearly a decade as Online Editor and Lead Writer for the world's longest-running genre publication, Starburst Magazine, and his work has also been featured on BBC, TechRadar, Tom's Guide, WhatToWatch, Sportkskeeda, and various other outlets, in addition to being a Rotten Tomatoes-approved film critic. Between his main dayjob, his role as the lead panel host of Wales Comic Con, and his gig as a pre-match host for Wrexham AFC games, Andrew has also carried out a hugely varied amount of interviews, from the likes of Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Adrienne Barbeau, Rob Zombie, Katharine Isabelle, Leigh Whannell, Bruce Campbell, and Tony Todd, to Kevin Smith, Ron Perlman, Elijah Wood, Giancarlo Esposito, Simon Pegg, Charlie Cox, the Russo Brothers, and Brian Blessed, to Kevin Conroy, Paul Dini, Tara Strong, Will Friedle, Burt Ward, Andrea Romano, Frank Miller, and Rob Liefeld, to Bret Hart, Sting, Mick Foley, Ricky Starks, Jamie Hayer, Britt Baker, Eric Bischoff, and William Regal, to Mickey Thomas, Joey Jones, Phil Parkinson, Brian Flynn, Denis Smith, Gary Bennett, Karl Connolly, and Bryan Robson - and that's just the tip of an ever-expanding iceberg.
