"The United States is home to 5% of the world's population...but 25% of the world's prisoners."

From the director of Selma, 13th investigates the growing inmate population in America, particular the mass incarceration of people of colour since the end of the Civil War.

The title refers to the 13th Amendment, which states that slavery and involuntary servitude is to be abolished, except in the cases of criminal punishment.

Ava DuVernay's documentary chronologically demonstrates how this "loop hole" has been exploited. From denying African-Americans the vote, Jim Crow's segregation laws, Nixon's war on drugs and to private prison complexes designed to deliver to profit.

13th has garnered universal acclaim and tremendous amount of accolades including a PrimeTime Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary.
