10 Best Documentary Films To Watch On Disney+

8. Empire Of Dreams

Much like the Star Wars saga itself, this is a mammoth production that runs for almost two and half hours. While the version available on Disney+ has been edited for the medium, the 2004 documentary is a detailed, deep dive into the production of the original trilogy.

It is shown in chronological order, beginning with the earliest days of George Lucas's career and following the story through to the end of Return of the Jedi. A host of familiar faces appear on the screen, all interviewed about their experiences while making the films.

It also goes into detail about the impact of the films, which have taken not only the box office by storm, but continued to ignite imaginations to this day. While this film was made long before The Force Awakens became a reality, it is clear in the telling that the story of Star Wars was far from over.

Archive footage features original actors Peter Cushing and Sir Alec Guinness, while there is only the barest mention of the unfortunate David Prowse, who was the body stand-in for Darth Vadar. Prowse has a documentary all to himself about his experiences (also well worth a watch!)

This is a must see for any Star Wars fan. The extended look at the casting process for the main characters alone, including a young Kurt Russell auditioning for the part of Han Solo, is a treat that more than justifies the journey.
