10 Best Dragons In Film & TV

5. Dragon - Shrek

Game of thrones
Dreamworks

The dragon in Shrek might not have a name beyond Dragon, but she certainly has a lot of personality. The Shrek movies, the first two especially, were fantastically clever riffs on typical fairytale and animation tropes, and Dragon is no exception to that.

Despite being huge hits upon release, Shrek seems to have been memed into a joke, but the films deserve a lot of credit for lampooning their own genre while growing it. Dragon starts out as a stock dragon, breathing fire, guarding a princess, trying to kill Shrek... the usual dragon deal.

Once she meets Donkey though, it’s revealed she’s a girl dragon (well of course she’s a girl dragon!), and she develops far beyond her position as the film’s roadblock. Donkey and Dragon fall in love, and their relationship is expanded upon in each sequel.

As Shrek did with a lot of fairytale conventions, they turn our expectations of a dragon on their head in the best way. Without any dialogue, Dragon’s body language, character style and silent dynamic with Donkey make her one of the best characters in the Shrek franchise.
