4. Toothless - How To Train Your Dragon

Toothless isn’t your typical dragon. In fact, that’s sort of the point.

He’s so unlike what Hiccup expects of a regular dragon that this duo of atypical heroes is able to form a cast iron bond so quickly. Aping Disney’s techniques with Stitch in Lilo & Stitch, Dreamworks gave Toothless hyper reactive body language, filling him up with comedic personality.

As the second silent Dreamworks dragon in a row, the studio clearly knows what they’re doing.

Toothless’ bouncy nature has become the most endearing thing about the How To Train Your Dragon franchise by a wide margin. The last known Night Fury dragon in existence, Toothless and Hiccup work together to end the viking/dragon war once and for good.

His prosthetic tail wing to match Hiccup’s missing foot is a really interesting piece of symmetry between the two characters too, building on their deep connection. Toothless is just a fantastically designed creature. Every inch of him is well thought out, tells a story and connects to the audience.

Certainly not your standard dragon, but it’s because of this that Toothless is able to end the war. The entire franchise basically rests on his back, and he carries it with ease.
