Before Indiana Jones nuked the fridge, it had at least two solid entries that were primarily about Harrison Ford begrudgingly (he does everything begrudgingly) beating the crap out of Nazis over ancient artifacts. Primarily, these were inspired by the serialized shorts than ran before the features of George Lucas and Steven Speilberg's youth, expanded upon with budget and mythology.

There were some nifty upgrades. The two entries in question (Raiders and Last Crusade, respectively) were less racist than, say, Temple of Doom. They had some of the best set-pieces in recent action history and they also allowed for a strong female character.

No longer were women in action films simple damsels in distress, Marion Ravenwood is introduced in her bar, drinking a woman twice her size under the table. Not only does she easily win, her opponent passing out, she's able to hold her own in a fight scene and shootout that happens moments after she's imbibed quite a healthy dose of ethanol. So not only is she a good drinking partner, she'll stand up for you if she's on your side.
