6. Chet - Kicking And Screaming

Eric Stoltz in Kicking and Screaming
Trimark Pictures Inc.

Anyone who's ever attended a semester of university knows Chet (Eric Stoltz).

Chet's the 30-something guy who works at the Campus bar; he never really finished his degree in communications or whatever nonsense he majored in, but he took an elective in just about every subject, so he can recommend professors, even run through lesson plans with you.

But the most important lesson in Noah Baumbach's film is ultimately lost on its 20-something protagonists living in a post-graduation malaise. Chet may not have all the answers, but his wisdom is simple enough to be motivational, especially when you're fixing to act on impulse. But, like Chet, you never really follow through.

"You want to make God laugh? Have a plan," Chet muses, quoting the old adage without offering anything of value beyond pushing the last legal drug. But at least he's always there, to serve as a warning for those astute enough to catch on early or friendly company for when you wind up right where he is.
