10 Best Film Directors With Less Than 5 Films
5. Barry Jenkins
Barry Jenkins directed one of the greatest films of the past decade in Moonlight, an exceptionally powerful and moving coming of age film that managed to upset La La Land for Best Picture. Moonlight was an notable achievement, being both challenging and moving and with incredible craftmanship throughout.
At present, he only has three films, Medicine for Melancholy being his first, and If Beale Street Could Talk being his most recent. Beale Street couldn't quite live up to the resonance of Moonlight, but it still managed to be a strong entry in Jenkins' slowly growing portfolio.
Jenkins has a talent for character progression which is most clear in Moonlight but present across all his films. He makes the audience care deeply about who is on screen and the love he has for those characters is always present.
The next project Jenkins has lined up is the prequel to the 'live action' remake of The Lion King. Certainly a change of direction for the previously grounded director. Hopefully he can do more with that franchise than Jon Favreau did.
