This horror director has already made a name for himself with two films that are committed to realism and authenticity to the time in which they are set.

With his debut film The Witch, Robert Eggers created one of the very best stories of paranoia as a 1630s New England family succumbs to the torment of a nearby woodland witch.

The film features a career making performance from Anya Taylor-Joy and period appropriate dialogue that feels intricately woven together. The film is an example in slow burning fear that will slowly take over the family and the audience both.

His second film, The Lighthouse, took things even further. With a cast that practically only contains Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, the film let's the two actors give everything they've got as they slowly go insane trapped on a small island together. Eggers knows exactly when to cut and when to keep filming the two performers and it stands as a fantastic exercise in madness.

His films beg to be discussed and dissected and his next film The Northman, which reunites Eggers with Taylor-Joy and Dafoe, is likely to be no exception.
