10 Best Films Made From Black List Screenplays

2. Hell Or High Water

Lionsgate

The screenplay for neo-Western Hell or High Water was already snapped by production company Sidney Kimmel Entertainment in 2012 even before that year’s Black List was even officially announced, but didn’t start shooting until 2015. It’s a good thing it eventually did as it went on to rank as the highest grossing indie of 2016 and received a total of four Academy Award nominations including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.

Originally titled Comancheria – a name given to the west Texas and New Mexico region, the setting and filming location of the movie respectively – the script was penned by Taylor Sheridan. Although he’s probably best known as Deputy David Hale from Sons of Anarchy, he’s an accomplished screenwriter too having also written the script for Denis Villeneuve’s critically acclaimed crime drama Sicario.

Sheridan’s directorial debut Wind River, another crime thriller penned by his own fair hand, has already received very favourable reviews on the festival circuit and is due for release this August.
