10 Best Horror Anthology Movies
1. Trick 'r Treat
It's surprising that more anthology films based on Halloween don't exist, as it seems like a perfect avenue for a horror flick. If the concept seems like a good idea on paper, then Trick r' Treat is the physical proof you need to see the potential of anthologies based on the spooky holiday.
Trick r' Treat gives its audience multiple interwoven stories. Some of them appeal to typical horror movie tropes, and others subvert the audience's expectation, taking you by surprise and keeping the film's tone constantly unpredictable.
Part of what makes this movie so unique is how interconnected the narratives are. Anthology movies tend to keep all of their shorts separate and connect them by some loose thread that holds the film together. However Trick r' Treat plays more like Pulp Fiction as the individual segments are packed with references to the other characters and even include a tonne of cross over, with some shorts paying off established narrative set-ups from others.
The movie fits like a jigsaw puzzle and is greatly accented by Sam, the malevolent little demonic figure who acts as a physical enforcer of the Halloween rulebook. This character could have become an iconic member of the horror movie villain roster if the flick were to have had sequels or spin-offs.
