2. Creepshow

Trick R Treat
Warner Bros.

Two of the most iconic figures in horror have to be the literary master Stephen King, and the legendary film-maker George A. Romero. Seeing the pair team up would be a dream come true, and thankfully, you don't have to imagine it, because a film already exists and it's called Creepshow.

Creepshow is written by King and directed by Romero, and it is precisely the kind of thing you would expect from them. King's gift for generating stories that scare you whilst making you laugh is never-ending, and Romero's skill behind the director's chair helps to make all of the shorts visually striking but varied in tone.

It's held together by this lavish EC horror comics style that makes each of the five shorts full of spooky horror fun. The almost cartoonish aesthetic gives the film this strong comic-book vibe, making it thoroughly campy. Still, the horrifying scenarios and grotesque effects keep it from going too far, helping it walk the line between overly goofy and too scary perfectly.

This film would go on to garner sequels and even a TV series on Shudder, but while those projects all have their merits, nothing beats the original.
