10 Best Horror Anthology Movies

3. Tales From The Crypt

Trick R Treat
20th Century Fox

While this flick sounds like it might be an adaptation of the classic Tales from the Crypt TV series, it's not. In fact, this British horror movie actually preceded the iconic anthology show by almost two decades. However, although it bears no connection, it does get its stories from the gruesome EC comics that the long-running series was based on, and is a thoroughly macabre yet fun ride.

The movie follows a group of strangers who find themselves in a crypt and are confronted by the mysterious Crypt-Keeper - played by a real human and not a puppet here. He proceeds to tell each of them a tale about how they could die, and each one is full of barbarism and horror.

While it lacks the comedic and irreverent charm of the EC comics and the eventual TV adaptation, the film is grotesque and full of superb storytelling. It has an atmosphere that keeps you on edge, even though many of the visual effects are reflective of its age.

Additionally, each story has a sense of punishment that makes the title feel hellish and acts as a great character study for every individual role. Sure, the absence of the hilarious puppet version of the Crypt-Keeper is a shame, but you'll hardly notice as you're transfixed by the dark tales on display.
