10 Best Horror Comedies Of The 2020s (So Far)
1. The Menu
Mark Mylod's satirical drama The Menu opens with a young woman called Margot (Anya-Taylor Joy) being invited to a secluded restaurant, helmed by the enigmatic chef, Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes). Even though Margot is promised a night she'll never forget, the horrifying events that unfold are not what she expected.
Paradoxically, The Menu is consistently funny and nerve-wracking despite never overplaying the horror or comedy. These elements are explored subtly, complementing both genres in the process.
Though it takes time to get to the meat of the matter, The Menu never feels slow. Based on Slowik's defeated demeanour and the waitresses' passive-aggressive comments, we know something unpleasant is coming, keeping us on edge early on.
Although the premise invites lots of gore-heavy outcomes, The Menu never takes the easy option. Blood is spilled, but watching Slowik psychologically torment his patrons is more unsettling. The flawless dialogue is accentuated by the impeccable delivery of the cast, some who give arguably the best performance of their career.
The Menu does such a sublime job at genre-bending, people who don't normally gravitate towards horror are likely to enjoy it. It's a witty and savagely entertaining experience that lingers long after the final course.
Bon appetite.
