Move over Happy Death Day - there's a new time-travel horror-comedy in town.

In Totally Killer, a teenager called Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) is heartbroken when her mother is murdered by the resurfaced Sweet Sixteen Killer. When Jamie accidentally time-travels to 1987 (as you do), she realises she can stop the Sweet Sixteen Killer's massacre before it starts and avert her mother's death.

With a premise like that, it's no surprise much of the humour comes from poking fun at outdated concepts of the era. Although these types of gags are low-hanging fruit, Blumhouse's sci-fi slasher pulls it off, thanks to the solid script and superb delivery from the ensemble, especially the lead star. Shipka has amazing chemistry with each of her cast members, and has an amazing ability to juggle comedy and drama simultaneously.

Speaking of which, it's refreshing to see Totally Killer refuse to compromise the drama. It takes Jamie's dilemma as seriously as a heart attack, emphasising how desperate she is to save her mother. The film also contains a clever killer reveal, which most viewers won't see coming.

Totally Killer mightn't have made waves upon its release, so let's hope it develops a cult-following in the future.
