10 Best Horror Comedies Of The 2020s (So Far)
7. The Babysitter: Killer Queen
After killing his Satanic babysitter and her sadistic minions from the previous film, Cole Johnson (Judah Lewis) tries his best to readjust to life and fit in at high school. But when a creepy student called Phoebe (played by a pre-Scream Jenna Ortega) transfers to Cole's class, it isn't long before he's fending off Devil worshippers once more.
At first, The Babysitter: Scream Queen comes across as a carbon copy of its predecessor. But once we reach the second act, the sequel goes in a different direction while still maintaining the original's spirit. Everything is ramped up, including the gore, the kills, and the over-the-top schlockiness. Several returning characters get more to do this time around, which is nice since they didn't get the chance to showcase their talents before.
Though Ortega wasn't a household name yet, she's clearly the standout here. Her character is set up as a one-note character but the Wednesday star's nuanced performance turns Phoebe into the movie's emotional core.
Even though Scream Queen could've been a safe follow-up, it's superior to the original in certain ways, since it creates a complex story, seamlessly connects with the first instalment's narrative, and offers a surprisingly heartfelt climax.
