10 Best Horror Films Of The 2010s (So Far)
8. Under The Skin
Not exactly a traditional horror film, Under the Skin is a surrealist visual horror that is scary in a more unsettling way.
Scarlett Johanson delivers a stellar performance as a cold, calculating voyeur of an alien creature who experiences a great deal more of humanity than she may have anticipated. Upon initially coming to Earth, she sexually entices various men around town, luring them back to her home where she entraps them and steals their skin.
Though these early sequences are visually stunning, where the film excels is in its second half. After beginning to form a connection to the humans, Johanson's character starts to experience a fuller spectrum of human emotions, including happiness and even love. These sequences are increasingly intimate, yet incredibly powerful.
Whether she's empathizing with a woefully disfigured man or having consensual sex for the first time, each new interaction draws her closer to humanity. Sadly, it does not end well for her. By the time the film is over, it has delivered a searing commentary on the concepts of sexuality and immigration while also burning some unshakable visuals into the viewer's mind.
Mesmerizing and terrifying, this is a film you won't soon forget.
