10 Best Horror Movie Musicals To Watch This Halloween 2020
1. Phantom Of The Paradise (1974)
Whilst Phantom of the Paradise is loosely based on Gaston Leroux's novel The Phantom of the Opera (as well as Faust and Dorian Gray), Brian De Palma does a fantastic job of transforming the storyline into something completely different and making it his own.
From the musical underscore to the visuals, the classical stylings of The Phantom of the Opera are made contemporary, and almost somewhat dystopian in its setting. Although the film received negative views and was a box office failure, it's now developed to have a much more positive reception with a cult status.
One of the greatest strengths within Phantom of the Paradise is how it presents you with an extravagant, lively rock musical reined in with a great level of melancholy. The story is a tragedy of a man trying to take back the youth and success he once had by selling his soul to the devil. It's a thoroughly wild ride from beginning to end, not lacking of distinctive colours, unique costuming, excellent side characters (Beef, anyone?) and a one of a kind Paul Williams rock soundtrack.
With a flavour of science fiction, there's no better horror comedy musical than De Palma's Phantom of the Paradise.
