7. Evil Dead 2 (1987)
Based On: Evil Dead (1981) So this may seem like a bit of a cheat, using a sequel on a list of remakes, but Evil Dead 2 is more of a rethinking of the Evil Dead mythology than it is a true sequel. While the first fifteen minutes play like a "Previously, on the Evil Dead" the rest of the film treads reasonably new ground, but the movie is still about a man stuck in the woods trying to fight off evil spirits. It takes more of a comedic slant than its predecessor, but Evil Dead 2 is a film that takes the concept of the first Evil Dead and makes slight alterations to suit the new narrative, which I would argue is more emblematic of a remake than a sequel, even though it has a 2 in the title. And although there was a more "legitimate" remake of the film that came out this year, it doesn't compare to the quality of Evil Dead 2. But after all of that clarification, it's important to note that Evil Dead 2 is a great movie and Sam Raimi really upped his game in making it.
