Given the weight of expectation on director Ari Aster sparked by Hereditary's success, what he did next was always going to be heavily hyped. And like Jordan Peele, Aster avoided the temptation to make something more commercially minded in the interest of building his own financial brand and instead went even more weird.
The result is a divisive, but spell-binding oddity focusing as much on the ghosts of past family trauma (already a running theme for him) as it is on the evil machinations of the Swedish cult the cast find themselves the "guests" of. It's not so much scary as unsettling and Aster proves himself horribly adept at sticking his finger in wounds and just pushing.
Following her excellent career choices so far, Florence Pugh is great as Dani, and while there's some suspension of disbelief in her and her friends' willingness to stay with the cult even after they've seen some serious red flags, it's just nice to have some familiar horror tropes for a little strong footing at times.
