9. Scream VI
The second movie of what was supposed to be the "new Scream trilogy" (before just about everyone involved jumped ship or was fired), Scream VI transplants the action from sleepy Woodsboro to the Big Apple, as the kids from 2022's Scream - Sam (Melissa Barrera), Tara (Jenna Ortega), Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad (Mason Gooding) - try to get on with their new college lives. Needless to say, Ghostface has other plans...
Centring on Halloween, which is something of a major event in this iteration of NYC, the film uses the natural scares, costumes, crowds and confusions offered up by the holiday to give its villain that extra edge. Surprisingly though, it is the first film in the Scream franchise to do so.
While Wes Craven indubitably thought it would be just a bit too much to set the original Scream on Halloween, what with its already bloated references to other spooky properties - including, of course, John Carpenter's Halloween - Scream VI directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick had no such qualms. And it was about time.
