10 Best Horror Movies That Subverted Classic Cliches
3. The Babysitter
Now, we understand if you’re balking at the sight of Charlie
Angels director/ much-maligned action helmer McG’s name on this list, and
admittedly the man is associated with some of the cringiest flicks to come out
of the noughties. But the stars aligned for him in 2017 with this comeback, a
lower budget horror comedy effort for Netflix which benefited from a stellar
central turn from future Ready or Not star Samara Weaving, a solid supporting
cast including The Duff’s Robbie Amell and Ken Marino, and a killer subversive
conceit.
The eponymous beautiful babysitter is the young heroine who will no doubt have to save her young charges from some yet-to-be-unveiled horror movie threats, right?
Sure—or she’s the satanic, possibly outright demonic villain herself, and it’s her young charge who has to try and escape her clutches. It’s a brilliant subversion, one which proves strong enough to anchor this fast-paced, funny, and ultimately sweet—if hilariously gory—horror comedy coming-of-age mashup.
