10 Best Horror Movies Turning 30 In 2020

1. Gremlins 2: The New Batch

Gremlins 2 New York
Warner Bros.

This. Film. Is. Hilarious. While it is a horror (don't show your children) it is also a rip roaring comedy from start to finish. It builds on the idea of the original, which was a more straightforward although beloved film and has a ball with the format. There are more Gremlins. There is more water. They have more power this time. All that would make for standard sequel fare and yet the makers decided to go the whole hog and make the film self-aware, moving from horror comedy into parody.

The film makes knowing callbacks to the first film, laughing along with the rest of us as Kate relates the latest traumatic story, inspired by the latest memory from her seemingly horrible past. Star Trek Voyager alum Robert Picardo is on board as a sleezy executive who ends up in a strange romance and John Glover appears as the wonderful company owner, eccentric to a T.

The real stars of the piece are the Gremlins themselves, tearing through the film, quite literally at points. Critics are attacked and Hulk Hogan's favourite film is interrupted by the little critters. It's hard not to feel a lump in the throat when the entire collection join together for a rendition of New York, New York - lead by the only speaking Gremlin, voiced by Tony Randall.

If you only watch the first film once, prepare to enjoy this one on repeat - one of the best examples of films turning 30 this year that deserve to be enjoyed forevermore. Also it has Christopher Lee. No more needs to be said.
