7. The Others

Starring Nicole Kidman in a far darker role than you'd expect from her glittering filmography, The Others is a subtle, understated psychological horror movie that remains a mystery until its final act - drawing you in close before pulling the rug out and flipping everything you thought you knew about the genre on its head. As Kidman's Grace awaits her husband to return from war, she cares for their two children, Anne and Nicholas, who suffer from a rare photosensitivity disease that means even the smallest amount of sunlight will hurt them.

As such, their home is dark and oppressive, and has assumedly become home to wayward ghosts. You can't really blame them when you've set up the perfect dank, dark, supernatural dwelling spot, though, as one can only imagine ghosts are like little ectoplasmic moths that have found a lovely cushy closet.

Whilst the finale of the movie taking a turn that none could have predicted, the way The Others draws out its scares and its central intent is only solidified by the lack of death that happens in the film. Whilst there's a technicality here, this is still one that absolutely plays by the 'nobody dies' rules.
