10 Best Jump Scares In Sci-Fi Movie History

7. I'm Waiting - Event Horizon

Extraterrestrial 2014
Paramount Pictures

From the mind of Paul W.S Anderson, the filmmaker behind the enjoyable schlock of the Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat film adaptations, comes Event Horizon.

A genuine cult gem of sci-fi horror, this film follows a group of astronauts on a rescue mission to the eponymous ship that has suddenly reappeared orbiting Neptune. Upon reaching the ship, the crew discover it was conducting an experiment involving black holes that went wrong and consequently opened the gates to Hell.

Not long after boarding the sinister spaceship, the crew begin to experience horrifying hallucinations when the Horizon’s machine is reactivated. While each of these sequences are as unnerving as the last, it’s the scare in Weir’s (Sam Neill) encounter that earns a place on this list.

After a woman’s whispering voice wakes him from stasis, a confused and unnerved Weir begins to wander the ship’s empty corridors searching for the voice’s source. His search leads him to a woman sitting on a chair facing away from him. He cautiously spins the chair, revealing his dead wife with her eyes closed.

We expect the scare to come from her, but Anderson catches audiences off-guard by having a hand grab Weir’s shoulder when the camera cuts back to him.
