6. Beau's Death - A Quiet Place

Extraterrestrial 2014
Paramount Pictures

Although John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place takes the guise of an apocalyptic creature feature, lying just underneath the surface is a heart-breaking tale of a family torn apart by grief within a situation they have no control over.

Atmosphere is everything in a world where sound is associated with danger, and Krasinski wastes no time in establishing this within the film’s introduction.

The Abbott family silently searches for supplies in a store when their young son picks up a spaceship toy. His father (Krasinski) signs to him it’s too loud and, removing the batteries, places it aside. But his deaf sister (Millicent Simmonds) hands him it back, unaware that he’s taken the batteries too.

As they make their way home, Beau manages to insert the batteries back in the toy and turns it on. Traditionally in horror, silence is the audial cue that signals something horrible is about to happen; but here the opposite is true. The sounds of the spaceship ring out like a siren as the parents realise what’s happened.

Krasinski runs towards his son, but it’s too late. Within a blink of an eye, a creature pounces into frame and snatches the child who was too young to understand his actions.
