10 Best Mark Ruffalo Performances

5. Dominick/Thomas Birdsey - I Know This Much Is True (2020)

Mark Ruffalo Avengers
HBO

One of Ruffalo's most recent roles sees him taking a role on the small screen, as the wildly different and compelling Birdsey brothers. Though by no means an easy or uplifting watch, I Know This Much Is True is still a tour de force that sees him take on two equally powerful and contrasting figures.

Thomas Birdsey is a paranoid schizophrenic who cuts off his own hand in hopes that the sacrifice will end the Gulf War. Dominck, his depressed and tragic brother, attempts to save him from a mental hospital whilst coming to terms with his own tale of loss, heartbreak and grief.

Both characters are radically different, allowing Ruffalo to prove his salt as a performer. As Thomas, he is unpredictable and impulsive, but also lovable and human. As Dominick, he is loving and conflicted, dealing with the loss of his son whilst trying to stay strong for his troubled sibling.

Like I said, it's not an easy watch, but thanks to Ruffalo's dedication to the dual role (for which he scored an Emmy win), it is a great six hours of TV everyone should really check out.

Aidan Whatman hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
