2. KIlgrave (Jessica Jones)

What do you get if you have the looks and charm of David Tennant, a horrific childhood of painful experiments and the ability to make people do anything you say without question? A damn fine super-villain, that's what.

Kilgrave at his core is a spoilt child, with no one able to say no to him. He takes people’s kidneys without their consent, sexually assaults and abandons young women and turns students into drug addicts for his own amusement.

This is what fascinates him about Jessica Jones, who manages to break free of his powers after months of horrific abuse. Kilgrave spends most of season 1 trying to control Jessica in various ways, and, when that fails, tries to boost his powers so they will work on her, which earns him a broken neck for his trouble.

Kilgrave is such an effective villain that even the scenes he’s only mentioned in have a distinct effect on the surroundings, bathing everything in a purple light and filling everyone in the scene with a powerful sense of dread.

Kilgrave was so intrinsic to season 1 of Jessica Jones that season 2 felt slightly hollow due to the lack of his presence, with his sole appearance in one episode being the highlight of the season.
