10 Best Movies Actors Did After The Lord Of The Rings
2. Hugo Weaving - Black '47 (2018)
Hugo Weaving is a master of the stage and the screen. He's done the big character roles with Agent Smith in The Matrix and of course Elrond in The Lord of the Rings. But his talent becomes truly apparent during those more intimate character portraits. This is a fine example.
Named for the worst year of the Irish Famine, Black '47 is a bleak and gruesome examination of British Colonial rule in Ireland. It's a stark reminder of a point in time that hasn't been given its due on the big screen.
Hugo Weaving plays an ex British soldier who, whilst working for the authorities, kills a man in a fit of drunken rage. He is then given the choice between being hung for his crime, or hunting down an Irish fugitive whom he served in the army with.
The film takes on the mantel of a western style revenge/chase story, with the characters romping over the Irish countryside as their loyalties are brought into question and all sense of justice seems to be crushed under the boot of British colonial occupation.
