10 Best Movies Set On Halloween Night

7. Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark

31 Rob Zombie
Lionsgate

This movie owes a major debt to Stephen King. All the familiar themes are all here: a group of misfit kids out to party on Halloween night before they graduate and part ways, fall foul of local bullies and decide to seek refuge in Mill Valley's very own haunted house (every town needs one of these). Stella, an aspiring horror writer, plus fellow outcasts Chuck, Auggie and mysterious drifter Ramón, learn of the legend of Sarah Bellows and decide to investigate...

As the story goes, local girl and amateur author Sarah Bellows was accused of poisoning the town's children. Locked away with nothing but her stories, the house is left to ruin leaving Sarah's ghost to haunt the property, thus the spooky story becomes an urban legend, scaring the residents of Mill Valley into curating the cautionary tale.

When Stella finds the book of Sarah Bellows' stories, a new chapter is written, one for each kid that reads it. Ranging from re-animated scarecrows to ghosts who search the earth for their missing toes, the film is really a compilation of scares in the style of short stories.

Source material author Alvin Schwartz's anthology novels covered all manner of spooky tales of urban legend and folklore in the 1980s, aimed mainly at a teen audience. Here director André Øvredal and producer Guillermo del Toro serve up the terrors in this charming take on the popular spine-chillers, great fun for Halloween night.
