10 Best Non-Horror Films To Watch This Halloween 2020

1. Nightmare before Christmas

Buena Vista Pictures

The beauty of this fantastic stop-motion feature is that it doubles up brilliantly as both a Halloween and Christmas film. The movie is known for being a Tim Burton classic, and whilst this is true to the extent that he created the characters and was a producer, Henry Selick actually directs this film. That doesn't take away from any of the style that is synonymous with Burton, however.

We follow Jack Skellington, an influential figure in Halloween town. After becoming disillusioned with Halloween he ends up discovering Christmas Town and becomes obsessed. Eventually, Halloween's residents end up taking Christmas duties over and disaster occurs.

It's an excellent film for looking at the fun of Halloween and its position within our culture. The dark and scary are something that traditionally should be avoided, but it has a strange connection to us as we love to revel in all taboo things. The combination of such feelings with our everyday norms, however, just end up causing disaster. As it does for these characters when they try to go against their ghoulish natures.

It is a classic film to watch if you want to fully commit to either holiday in a manner that whilst holding plenty of macabre imagery, never feels scary.
