10 Best Ryan Reynolds Performances

4. Jerry Hickfang - The Voices (2014)

Ryan Reynolds Buried
Lionsgate

Without question the most wonderfully twisted and bizarre film Reynolds has ever done, The Voices sees the actor take the role of Jerry Hickfang, a schizophrenic who hides his diagnosis under a vale of optimism and an upbeat personality despite not taking his prescribed medication. In his delusions, he finds his pets talking to him and, one night, accidently kills his date (Gemma Arterton).

Not wanting to get in trouble, he disposes of Fiona's body and decides to put her severed head in the fridge. As his delusions worsen, he comes to believe she is still talking to him, and sets out to continue living his life as normal.

Playing Jerry gives Reynolds the chance to offer up his usual level of fun, witty humour, but balance it with an edge that is both tragic and disturbing. The Voices is pure black comedy, an underrated gem that is lifted to greatness by Reynolds' bold and daring character study. He also voices Jerry's pets, too, which is just an added bonus.
