10 Best Sci-Fi Film Comedies Of All Time
1. Back To The Future
The original and best of the time travelling trilogy, this Robert Zemeckis film was the obvious choice to top this list. The late call up of Michael J. Fox into the lead role of Marty McFly was a godsend, his natural energy and enthusiasm making his adventures through time enthralling throughout.
Zemeckis rewards the audience for its patience, with every story element carefully set up in the first act paying significant dividends by film's end. What makes this film so good is that despite being full of exposition, this actually manages to be a benefit rather than a negative. Being consistently reminded of the potential ramifications for each unfolding event and exactly what is required to stop it consistently heightens the tension, especially when we see their plan inevitably come unstuck.
The acting is perfect from the whole cast, Fox's energy matched by Christopher Lloyd's brilliant physical comedy, his facial expressions alone enough for some of the film's best laughs. The support cast is just as good, Crispin Glover superbly bringing the goofball nature of Marty's Dad to life as an adult and a teen, while Lea Thompson is dazzling as the Mum who develops a crush on her son. The star of the ensemble cast though is Thomas F. Wilson, his dynamic physical presence as school bully Biff making him one of the all time great film villains.
The Libyan terrorists story arc may not have aged that well, but this classic still deserves its ranking as the best Sci-Fi comedy ever.
