10 Best Sci-Fi Movie Endings Of All Time
5. District 9
The best science fiction stories take the very real issues that are plaguing the world and explore them in an unreal setting. One of the best examples of this is Neil Blomkamp's District 9, a different kind of alien invasion story that is a direct allegory of apartheid South Africa.
The final sequence of the film sees the alien mothership successfully leaving Earth, after one who Wikus has befriended promises to return in three years with a cure. After a plethora of 'interviews' with Johannesburg residents giving their thoughts on the events of the film and the potential fate of Wikus, we see his wife find a flower sculpted from junk on her doorstep.
It's a sign to her that her husband is still alive, and we see one final interview with Wikus pre-transformation talking about how his wife is 'a real angel'. It then cuts to Wikus in the present, who has now completely transformed and is hand-crafting another flower (indicating that his humanity is still there), before it cuts to black.
It's a bittersweet ending, as despite the horrific changes that Wikus' body has gone through, the real transformation of his morality and ethics is a beautiful redemption.
