10 Best Sci-Fi Movie Endings Of All Time
6. Ex Machina
The exploration of artificial intelligence is a common theme of science fiction, and Alex Garland's Ex Machina is one of the best examples of it.
Throughout the film we see the human Caleb (Domnhall Gleeson) and android Ava (Alicia Vikander) form an almost romantic connection, with Caleb going behind his boss' back to help Ava escape after he sees the questionable things he's doing with his creations. However, the idea of a dream escape with his new love doesn't last long at all.
The film begins it's climax when Nathan (Oscar Isaac) declares that the real test for Ava was to see if she would manipulate Caleb into helping her, arguing that the core of what it means to be human is the ability to decieve others. After making her escape from the cell she's been confined in and murdering her creator, Nathan (Oscar Isaac), Ava covers her mechanical body with artificial skin leftover from other designs.
Donning a white dress and brunette wig, Ava spots Caleb trapped inside the security room. But rather than freeing him, Eva leaves on her own, boarding the very helicopter that was bound to pick up Caleb, and proving that she passed the true test that Nathan had set for her.
