10 Best Subplots In The Harry Potter Movies
6. Fred And George’s Entrepreneurship (The Order Of The Phoenix And The Half-Blood Prince)
The Weasley twins are a regular source of comedy throughout the series. With their quick wits and their knack for troublemaking, they always provide us with plenty of entertainment.
Rather than going down a more academic route, Fred and George set their sights on entrepreneurship. During their final year, they test a variety of products – such as their ingenious Skiving Snackboxes – on the students of Hogwarts. These experiments prove to be a success, and the twins go on to create a joke shop: Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes.
Even within the context of Diagon Alley, the shop stands out immediately. It’s crammed with exciting products, ranging from daft practical jokes to powerful love potions and useful accessories.
What’s cool about this subplot is that it breaks the mould of what we’ve come to expect. The twins, despite their mother’s disapproval, turn their backs on the more mundane careers that dominate the wizarding world (like working for the Ministry) and pursue something they’re genuinely passionate about.
With the success of their joke shop, Fred and George also demonstrate how clever they are. Whilst their exam results are far from ideal, both of them are a lot brighter than people give them credit for.
