10 Best Subplots In The Harry Potter Movies

5. Ron’s Jealousy (The Goblet Of Fire)

When Harry’s name comes out of the Goblet of Fire, Ron breaks off their friendship. It’s a harsh, immature thing to do, but those who’ve only seen the movies often miss the deeper meaning behind Ron’s decision.

Throughout his life, Ron has had to grapple with feelings of mediocrity. His older brothers and his two best friends are all talented individuals with impressive reputations, whilst he often feels a bit like a sidekick. So, when Harry is thrust into the spotlight once again, Ron’s jealousy reaches new heights, and he gives him the cold shoulder.

Feeling mediocre about one’s abilities and being jealous of others is something many teenagers struggle with. Once you look past Ron’s nasty persona, he becomes a much more relatable character during this time. His decision to neglect his best friend – though morally wrong – is actually understandable.

Indeed, this unique subplot delves into a universal theme that too many Harry Potter fans fail to appreciate. Far from being an irrelevant part of the story, Ron’s jealousy is something that all of us can sympathise with.
