Ready Player One is built around pop culture references. In a Matrix-like gaming world, where you can literally become who or whatever you want, you're going to find a plethora of players donning avatars that are instantly recognisable.

But the movie didn't just stop at having a few stormtroopers or Master Chiefs in the background, there were references to bands like Joy Division and Duran Duran, and movies like Excalibur and The Shining. In a world filled with the most popular fictional creations morphed together, it was surprising we didn't see Aragorn wielding a Ray-Gun, or Sauron cruising in a TIE fighter, but there were some subtle references to the Lord of the Rings.

During one of the in-game-battles, an Uruk-hai sword can be seen being brandished by one of the players. Another scene features a more subtle nod to Middle-earth, in which members of Innovative Online Industries are trying to find clues for the Third Key. A huge whiteboard stands in the background, showing Isengard as a possible location.
