2. The Lighthouse
As most people with day jobs will know, it's hard to keep your distance from an annoying colleague when you have to work together all day, every day. So learns Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson); lighthouse keeper and assistant to the gruff and grizzled Thomas (Willem Dafoe).
Between Ephraim's menial - but heavy - workload and the irritable old coot constantly farting up a storm, it's not long before the younger man grows resentful. This soon turns into mania and delusion as the pair get drunker and more isolated. The pair are bound for conflict, and that's well before they start drinking kerosene.
Robert Eggers' surrealist gothic horror film - however you want to describe it - is a truly disturbing work of psychological terror. As Ephraim begins to unravel, Thomas grows ever more belligerent and irritating. We've all been there; it's no wonder Ephraim snaps, attacking Thomas, burying him alive in front of the titular lighthouse. Which, with his colleague dead, Ephraim hopes to get all to himself. At last, some peace and quiet.
