10 Biggest Downer Endings In Major Movies

6. Drag Me To Hell

Audiences probably should have seen this one coming, giving that the conclusion is given away in the very title of the film. Even so, when Alison Lohman is indeed dragged to hell in the final moments of Sam Raimi's 2009 horror comedy, it's a genuine shocker.

Lohman's Christine is an ambitious young woman working in a bank with an eye on climbing the professional ladder, but her boss fears she's unable to make tough decisions. However, her first attempt at playing tough backfires horribly, as she denies a loan extension to an elderly Romani gypsy (Lorna Raver) who subsequently puts a curse on her.

Christine soon discovers she is condemned to be taken to Hell within three days unless she can somehow break the curse. The film sees her struggling to do just that, in the face of increasingly unpleasant supernatural torments.

So often with films of this nature, we assume that the protagonist's fight to survive will pay off, reiterating that common message that the willpower and perseverance of the human spirit can overcome any obstacle, however great.

Not so here, when, in the very last scene, Christine realises all her efforts have been for nought, and demon hands tear up through the ground and drag her down into the firey depths of oblivion. Cheery.

Ben Bussey hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
